Sorry to start the birthday letter with this, little one. But two chin national soldiers were killed, and so was an African-American named Mike Brown. The two news are very significant right now, but I don’t know if the history will still be remembered by the time you grow up. I will give a quick summary and leave the rest of the news for you to do your own research — you might have better internet search engines by then.
The two Chin National Army soldiers along with the other 20 other Kachin Independence Army soldiers were killed by the Burmese military while doing their training. Although they were trying to get the peace treaty going with the government, the Burmese soldiers fired artillery shelling, and some were injured as well. When confronted with this event, the Burmese military denied of any foreknowledge of the training going on, and said that it was not their intention to kill those soldiers. This past week has been a very sad week for our Chin people. Our community is not at peace.
Michael Brown was shot by a police officer who happened to be a Caucasian male. The case brings out a lot of unresolved racial problems in our system, and it has just been about being black and being white. Nobody is pleased and everyone is a victim. The police officer was found not guilty by the grand jury last night, and riots were going around in Ferguson and in the country. One side says “how could you shoot a kid to death?”, and one side says “the kid got what he deserved”. Our country is not at peace.
The world as we know is evil. If you are only putting your hope in this world, you will be very disappointed. Trust me that God is present in all these, God knows what He is doing and the evil shall not go unpunished. At the same time, we are to be the light of the world, to help lessen the evil causes of the world and to give them the ultimate hope of eternal life. Some may ask, “Where is your God in all these?” You can surely answer, “My God is storing up all His wrath right now for all the evil so that when He returns He will come in judgment.” That is right. The evil will not have the final laugh. My heart has been mourning along with the families and the nations this past week for it is hard to find the real truth in humans.
My beloved one, I don’t know what kind of things you will be facing in the future, but I hope you will always tell the truth. Regardless of the cause, please do tell the truth. The truth belongs to God, and God honors the truth. God is the truth. But when you do tell the truth, tell it out of love. For God is love. Since God is both love and truth, it will be wrong to tell the truth without love and vice versa.
Now that you are six years old, you are asking a lot of questions, and you seem to have some discernment in you. You are curious, and you are drawn by things that are abnormal to you. You have questions in your mind that you carry throughout the day, which you pour out to me later. I am intrigued by your heart and your mind. And I know that you will be asking a lot of questions in future, and about these people that I mentioned earlier in letter, I want you to ask who/what they could have been.
To quote the great writer C.S. Lewis — “It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you say it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – These are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.”
You see, no life is a mere breathe of soul that can be distinguished by its color, gender, wealth, and status. I think I told you this already, but I will say it again that when you grow up, I want you to see people as the reflection of their Creator, as the image-bearer of the Lord. They have values that we cannot weight. They have depths that we cannot measure. The only way and the only right way to see a human as a human is by looking at his/her Creator. Once we fail to do so, we see them as less than who they are / ought to be. Only after seeing them that way, you will know how to love them. The biblical account of why we should love one another is because we are God’s creation, and we are to show kindness to each other to display the glory of God. The only thing we owe to one another and each and everyone in this world is love (Rom 13:8).
Truth and love.
Hold onto them tight, sister. Write them in your heart, and never let them leap from you even when it hurts. Love does hurt. Love is not an easy thing. C.S Lewis said, “The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell”. You cannot try to have all your safety for yourself and yet try to love someone. The thing is, as people have more and more broken relationships, they become more and more closed up, and they don’t want to open up again. They just want to be safe. I guess I am talking about myself. It is true. The callouses in your heart don’t make you an experienced man nor a real man, but it makes you a scared man. It takes time to heal again. That’s why my wish and prayer for you is that God will keep you safe until one day you are ready to feel unsafe for someone. It is a torture to keep guarding yourself just because you don’t want to get hurt- that is the fallen side of humanity. I hope I can give you all the love you need so that you will never have to guard yourself so hard not to get broken. May you always be the light that goes into people’s lives shining in their darkest corners.
What about truth? Truth is the Word of God. Only truth has power to change and expose the evil. All truth belongs to God like I said earlier. Don’t ever take the Word of God so lightly. Bind your heart with it. Let them be your light in the darkest moments of your days and the happiest hours of your life. The only way Satan can deceive us is through lies and our best weapon is the Word of God – the truth that cannot be rejected. The Bible will tell you and help you know who you are. It will come alive in you as a wellspring. It will produce fruits and make you strong in the Lord. You know in Exodus 34, Moses asked the Lord to show His glory, and the Lord did. But how did God show it? Exodus 34:6 tells us that the Lord shows His glory by proclamation of who He is – “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet He does not leave the guilty unpunished; He punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.” 1. The Lord shows His glory in words and 2. The Lord shows His glory by proclaiming who He is. There is no other way to know God, but by reading the Scripture.
John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His gory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Believe in Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. Trust in Him wholeheartedly for your eternal salvation. There are eternal pleasures at His right hand. Rest in Him because you don’t have to work for your salvation. Truth and love, He will provide, for temptations and trials will shake you. Delight in Him every day. Don’t misplace your hope and joy.
i love you so much!
