1. Quick summary of the Gospel book of John — It is believed to be written by Jesus’ apostle John (not John the Baptist), and he usually refers to himself as “the one Jesus loved” in the Gospel. The book focuses on eternal life for the Jews and the gentiles. This Gospel book is different than the other three in many different ways. It talks about Jesus being one with the Father. Jesus being God because of the sayings “I am” – e.g. I am the good shepherd, the bread of life, the way, the truth, the life, living water, etc. The book also talks a lot about the role of Holy Spirit and what He will accomplish when Jesus goes back to the Father.
Yes, all the Gospel books may sound the same, but they are all very different.
2. v.1-3 It starts off like how it does in Genesis so that readers can understand the connections of even before the creation, Jesus existed. The Word (the divine essence of God) was there, the Word was with God and the Word was God. It is not merely just some words — but the very Word (the very being of God) that created us has become flesh for us.
Check Colossians 1:15-23 too. Everything that has been made was made through Jesus – for Him. Nothing comes into existing without Christ. Even your life. The Word of God is also the bible. How can we know Jesus, the Word? READ YOUR BIBLE! How can we see GOD? READ YOU BIBLE! How can we hear the Holy Spirit? READ YOUR BIBLE. the very living and active Word of God (Heb 4:12). To be honest, we do not realize how powerful the Word is.
3. v.4-5 That Word is the life of men and also the light. Darkness is merely the absence of Light. The darkness cannot overcome light and the Light comes to shine into the darkness of our lives / into the darkness of evil.
4. v.6-8 It talks about John the Baptist but it was very brief which means that John the Baptist is the focus of this at all, but the Light. John the Baptist is merely the witness of Christ. Take away: Do you make Jesus bigger or yourself bigger?
