little bit of my favorites.

February 10, 2013

i started using 1 Corinthians to do quiet times starting 10.13.12 and just finished at 02.07.13. what a great book exploring important doctrines on being a Christian, member of the church, a husband, gifts, resurrection etc… i would suggest anyone of different faith to read it too.

i just thought that a great way for me to finish this book is by going back on the verses and write down (not copy and paste) my favorite verses (the ones that blessed me the most) from it. that way, i can remember the blessings and whoever may read this will also be able to share those blessings. i will write a bit of annotations why i was blessed by them. i can feel my heart beating so fast with this…. what a joy in writing this blog!

1:7 therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
// it is He who will keep us strong to the end, and He already has equipped us with whatever we may need.

1:18 for the message of the cross if foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
// the message of the cross = our salvation + power. who can be against us?!

1:25 for the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
// pretty straight forward. sigh. i can never be too wise. a fool would think he is wise before God.

2:7 no, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. none of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
// the rulers of this age = the evil (ephesians 6:12). only if they know that crucifying the Son of God would mean saving the humanity, they would have never done that. they are probably regretting so much about that, Christ becoming the eternal king by resurrecting. only if they could understand God’s wisdom… and how great it is for us who know a glimpse of God’s wisdom.

3:6 i planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. so neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
// Lord, it is never me doing things, but it is You. use me as Your gardening tool.

4:3 i care very little if i am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, i do not even judge myself.
// what???!?!?! how do you not judge yourself? i wish i could care little about what i, myself, or others think, and leave things all to God.

4:7 for who makes you different from anyone else? what do you have that you did not receive? and if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
// dang Apostle Paul, why do you have say it in such a complicated way? but it’s true… everything i have, i received them from God, and nothing that i have is of my own. i can’t boast in them as if i never received them from God.

6:7 the very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. why not rather be wronged? why not rather be cheated? instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong and you do this to your brothers.
// lawsuits among believers. this, i can resonate a lot with because i really don’t want to be wronged nor be cheated, especially from other believers. my mentality is – why would a believer wrong and cheat on others? but then… apostle Paul is saying that let God be the judge and you handing the matters to God — it defeats the satan.

7:32-33 i would like you to be free from concern. an unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs- how he can please the Lord. but a married man is concerned about the affairs of the word- how we he can please his wife- and his interests are divided.
// marriage. i read the whole chapter 7 in one reading because it was kinda like ‘meh’ to me. but this verse spoke to me how i should spend my life as single ‘to be free from concern’. and now that i think about it again – the bible distinguishes between the married and unmarried, no nothing like ‘engaged’ or ‘dating’. it is pretty clear. so even if i am dating, my concern should be mainly on the Lord’s affairs and not having my interests divided.

8:9-13 be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak….. therefore, if what i eat causes my brother to fall into sin, i will never eat meat again, so that i will not cause him to fall.
// one of the best verses in bible that talks about maximum edification… limiting our freedom for the sake of others! wow, what a Christ-likeness in this message itself. only apostle Paul would write such things. so much wisdom needed. (old post –

9: 24-27 do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? run in such a way as to get the prize. everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. they do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. therefore i do not run like a man running aimlessly; i do not fight like a man beating the air. no, i beat my body and make it my slave so that after i have preached to others, i myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
// well said, man, well said! for the crown that will last forever and ever!!! (old post –

10:13 no temptation has seized you except what is common to man. and God is faithful, he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. but when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
// warnings from Israel’s history. still one of the best verses that i know to fight temptation. from this book, tempted and tried – “Satan, seeking to incite Job to curse God, intended evil. God, seeking to demonstrate the integrity of his servant, intended righteousness.” only the God of universe would intend the evil itself for our good. wowww praise unto Him!!!!

10:23 “everything is permissible” – but not everything is beneficial.
“everything is permissible” – but not everything is constructive,
// this is still on limiting our freedom on what we watch/play/eat/sing/listen/speak/praise/buy/…. it would be so nice to have this in the back of my head every single moment.

11:1 follow my example, as i follow the example of Christ.
// one day.. one day… i want to be able to show it. no, i don’t want to just say these words from my mouth, but display them from my actions. when my wife, children, relatives, friends, neighbors, strangers see the things i do, it would be so beautiful if their thoughts are “i want to follow this guy as an example because he is following the example of Christ” i know that it is the Lord’s will, and He is transforming us each day, every day. Lord, please take all of me.

12:7 now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
// sometimes i can get so jealous of other people’s gifts especially when i have some of it too, but they are just so much better at it eg. music. it is so silly to recognize others’ gifts so much and yet forgetting to sharpen our own skills. sometimes, it can get to the point that i am not blessed by their gifts, and it becomes so hard to see them even as teammate for the kingdom. gotta learn to be served and to serve for the common good.

13:4-8a love is patient, love is kind. it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. love never fails.
// this is how we ought to love. this is God’s love. and no, van is not patient, van is not kind. van envies, boasts and is very proud…….. it is the actual description of what God’s love is for us in Christ, and this is also who i am becoming as Christ is living in me.

13:10, 12 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. now we see but a poor reflection as a in mirror; then we shall see face to face. now i know in part; then i shall know fully, even as i am fully known.
// this supports the above statement about ‘love’. so much hope in this verse!!!!

15:10 but by the grace of God i am what i am, and His grace to me was not without effect. no, i worked harder than all of them- yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
// i am what i am by the grace of God, and His grace to me is at work. i think apostle Paul knows so well deep in his heart that he does not even judge himself. i cannot wait to see more and more of God’s grace.

15:21, 42-43 for since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man… so will it be with the resurrection of the dead. the body that is sown in perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown in natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
// imagine that day when our filthy bodies being renewed and raised spiritually imperishable, in glory, and in power. that is why resurrection gotta happen, and that’s why Christ had to defeat death and resurrected on the third day. amen!

15:55 “where, O death, is your victory? where, O death, is your sting?”
// when things are hard and the devil stealing my joy/peace, i want to shove this Word into his mouth. 15:57 but thanks be to God! He gives u the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

15:58 therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. let nothing move you. always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
// done deal. just gotta give our best in whatever we do, and that labor is pleasing to God. the labor will never go unnoticed. so glad it does not say, “give your best and when things are very successful, you will rewarded for your work”.

16:7 i do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; i hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.
// i thought this was cute. hehe. the point of apostle Paul saying this was that him spending time with them would be very helpful to his journey (16:6). it got me thinking, this is what i should do with the people who can be helpful to be on my journey too! i cannot make a passing visit to everyone, but i gotta stay sometimes, so that it would advance further in my journey for Christ.

16:13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. do everything in love.
// can this get any better than this? DO EVERYTHING IN LOVE! is love being shown through me being on guard? standing firm in the faith? being a strong man of courage? —

if you make it this far, i am so thankful that you did, and i did not mean to write this much at 2 in the morning lol. hope this post refreshes your spirit as it did to mine. and remember this-
15:33 do not be misled: “bad company corrupts good character.”!

16:24 my love to all of you in Christ Jesus. amen.
