birthday letters: what is mine?(4yo)

November 27, 2012

you made it well and alive through the year. PTL! you grew up so fast, and you are now like a total new person. your speech is a lot more clear and you can easily speak of what you want in both Chin and English. you develop this strong mentality of i-will-cry-if-i-don’t-get-what-i-want, and yea the best method i found so far is to distract you. it is working well for now, but we will see how long this will last.

you know, our grandma passed away on this February and mom was really devastated. she had to go to Burma for three months and dad couldn’t be home either because of work. so it was basically just you, me, and our older brother. he had to work too so, as i was going to school, i was like a parent to you. that was quite an experience. haha.. i am still learning so much about this parenting thing. i have lessened any physical means to discipline you actually. you know, sis, real disciplining requires love and wisdom, and i don’t know if i have both of them in me as much as our parents do. some literally think ‘proverbs 23:13 do not withhold discipline from a child‘ means that they can hit the child as much as they want. i disagree so. i would say that without love, the disciplining turns into abuse and it does not show love at all! because power is all that  it takes to abuse anything, and love is all it takes to change a person’s life.

anyways, you have been going to pre-k with yours cousins by our house and you are learning English really quick, even quicker than the other two. i’m proud of you, though you called me out as ‘DADDY’ in your classroom once. hahha but in my surprise, you corrected yourself and told me that i was your ‘brotha’ a few days later. you are awesome and your capacity to retain memory is amazing as well.

okay here, i just want to point out that one of the new words you have been using is ‘mine’. it seems like you love to use that word on everything that you see. i will tell you the truth right now that nothing in this world is yours. when you find out that, you will become really disappointed and uncomfortable. like the purse that you own, the house that we live in, the tv that we watch, the air you breathe etc. but when you find out whose everything is, then you will find your hope back (though it is the main reason why people are still devastated about). everything on heaven and earth belongs to our heavenly Father. by understanding and knowing that nothing on this earth belongs to us, we become FREE. first off, our faith in Christ has set us free from condemnation as a result for our sins. and secondly, understanding that even this faith comes from God (by His amazing grace and mercy) and that He has control over everything – it helps us to give and love others freely (more like things overflowing from us having this amazing relationship with God). as long as we hold onto these things on earth, we will never receive that freedom. as the free, we are free to worship God and free to share the love so that others may see God’s love. does it make sense to you?

i’m still having a hard time doing that so. though i may not be able to grasp this truth fully on this earth, i do know that the Holy Spirit is helping me day by day as i repent and confess my sins on how much i desire of this world. have you heard of the phrase ‘truth will set you free'(John 8:32)? yup. Jesus is the way, the truth, the life, and there you go!

i don’t think you know a lot of things that happen in our family this year unless we tell you so in the future. we went through a lot of tough times, especially me. there were things that i was hoping and working for the year, but things did not work out well as i thought they would. our parents also went through a lot of changes in their work that never happened before. 2012 is such an interesting year, and what i have learned so far is how to fall. some say that it’s not about how many times you fall, but how many times you get up, and i agree with that. in one of my favorite movies, Rocky Balboa, Rocky said, “but it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward.” not a bad line of motivation huh?  but more than that, i would suggest you should think about where do you fall and how to rise back. you see, when you get up holding onto other temporary things, you will fall again hard because they never last that long.

i would say, learn to fall on Jesus when life (sin) knocks you down. it wouldn’t matter how many times you fall or how hard you get hit.. because you know He will be catching you and molding/mending you, not only so, He can provide you with all the peace and understanding that you will ever need. being a follower of Christ is not an easy life… and the struggles never end, sis. complacency is our worst enemy, and i would rather fall than to be just be contend without a fight. some (including myself) think that becoming a Christian is about being good and perfect…. but only Christ is holy and perfect. thus, here is the tricky part- until we get to be in heaven, us becoming holy is us realizing how much we need Jesus in this earthly life (Hebrews 10:10.. we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all). it is never our doing, but what He has done for us and what He is working within us. when you realize that through the Word of God, the Spirit will teach to put our hope only in God, and so when you fall, you will rise with Christ! this year, i actually have learned to fall on the book of Psalms and God’s promises, and i tell you, i have fallen in love God deeper than ever before. don’t forget to ask a question like, ‘what do you want me to learn from this, God?’

in my letters, i will be referring you as a Christian who has faith in Christ. don’t be deceived though! my faith is not yours. i really wish mine could be yours, but that’s not how it works. you cannot inherit this from me, but only from our heavenly Father. i will be continually praying for you that He may grant you the faith. the best thing i could do for you now is to share the gospel with you through the Word, so that the Word may pierce through your soul and spirit as a sword sharper than any double-edged swords.
Romans 5:8 but God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
everything i have written so far is my Gospel, sis. i hope that God will help you write your own Gospel through Him living in you. always remember that all you gotta do is to ask, seek and knock. God is not far from you, “and without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

i love you.

the first birthday letter.
our grandma, a strong woman of God.
